Amrit means nectar possessing the power of immortality. Amrit is believed to have been brought by Lord Dhanvantari, when the Palazhi, or the Ocean of Milk was churned. It is said that the devas secured the amrit, without giving the asuras their due share.
For the Sikhs, amrit is sanctified sugar water used during the Khalsa initiation ceremony. Amrit finds frequent references in the epic Ramayana and many other Hindu puranas.
