Rajkot




Rajkot, the former capital of the princely state of Saurashtra, is one of the major industrial cities in Gujarat. It was founded in the 16th century by the Rajput chief Kunwar Vibhuji. The place is famous because Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the nation, spent his childhood here.

Rajkot has a variety of industries ranging from diesel engines to gold ornaments. Bandhani sarees, mirror work, patch work, bead work and silk embroidery of the city are famous. There is a national weaving institute for promoting the traditional weaves. Handicrafts of silver and textiles are exported from here.

Jagat Mandir, Aji dam, Kaba Gandhino Delo (Mahatma Gandhi's home), Lal Pari Lake and Renderda, Sardar Smriti Bhavan, Watson Museums and Jubliee Gardens are the chief attractions.

The city is spread roughly over 100 sq km and has a population of over 1.2 million. 98 km from Junagadh and 218 km from Ahmedabad, the city is well-connected by road, rail and air. Ideal time to visit is October-March.
