Garasias are a Rajput tribe mainly inhabiting in the southern parts of
Rajasthan such as
Mount Abu,
Kota and
Udaipur. According the legend Garasias are descendents from the Chauhan
Rajputs of south-west Rajasthan.
Garasias have an extra ordinary custom of marriage; their marriage usually takes place through elopement along with Gaur Fair, celebrated in March during full moon day. The bride’s father offers a bride price to the groom after the elopement.
The Garasias celebrate Nat, a feast of honor for their dead. It is usually performed only on Mondays and a stone memorial called Sura is erected after the cremation.
The religious practices of Garasias are similar to that of Hindus and they are governed by a Panchayat of five Patels or Judges.
