Pavagadh, a picturesque hill, is a well-know pilgrim center in the Halol Taluk of
Panchmahals District,
Gujarat. This is a world heritage site, registered at UNESCO in Paris. The name of the hill appears as 'Pavakgadh' or 'fire-hill' in ancient inscriptions. Pavagadh is the birthplace of Baiju, a famous musician in Gujarat, who preceded Tansen. It is around 50 km from
Vadodara.
Maa Mahakalika Temple is situated at the top of this hill. The hill has around 120 monuments which are protected by the Archeological Survey of India. Saat Kamaan, Champaner Fort, Nagina Mosque, Juma Mosque, Kevda Mosque, Hathikhana and Amir Manzil are some of the protected monuments at Pavagadh. The main attraction of Pavagadh Hill is the cable-car system between Machi and the final climb.
A major festival held annually at the foot of Pavagarh Hill, during the month of Chaitra (March/April), in honor of the Goddess Mahakali, is a major draw.
