Modhera was built by Raja Bhimdev I. Modhera is situated about 100 km north-west of
Ahmedabad. The temple has three main enclosures. The first one is a large rectangular stepped tank, Surya Kund, containing holy water. The second is the sabha mandapa, used for religious gatherings. Its unique walnut-shaped ceiling is supported by 52 spectacular pillars. The sabha mandapa has four doorways. The third one is the inner sanctum or the guha mandapa.
There's a tunnel inside the guha mandap that leads to nearby town of Patan. The temple is renowned for its intricately carved panels and beautiful sculptures.
