Modhera

Modhera, also known as Mundera, is a famous pilgrim center situated on the banks of the Pushpavati River, in Mehsana District, Gujarat. Hundreds of pilgrims throng to the place to pay homage to Lord Surya, every year. Modhera is 102 km north-west of Ahmedabad.

Modhera was an ancient township, which dates back to the Puranic age. It was then known as Dharmaranya. Legend is that: it was the site where Lord Ram performed a Yajna (sacrifice) to purify himself of the sin of having killed Ravana, the king of Lanka.

Major point of attraction is the Sun Temple, constructed in 11th century during the reign of King Bhimdev I of Patan. The temple is a best example of Solanki temple architecture in the state. There is a Surya Kund, a pond used by devotees, in front of the temple. Over 100 small temples, seen on the step-terraces around this huge pond, are also worth visiting.

The nearest airport is Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. The closest railway station is Mehsana Junction Railway Station at Mehsana (35 km).
