Annakoot is celebrated on the next day of
Diwali. In his childhood,
Lord Krishna saved Vrindavan from the wrath of
Indra by lifting the mount Govardhan and humbled Indra in that process. This episode was celebrated by the villagers of Vrindavan with a sumptuous feast and thus began the tradition of Annakoot.
On this occasion, people undertake fast and perform a special prayer called ‘Govardhan puja’ in the evening. Fairs are held during this time in certain areas of North India.
