Wankaner is a taluk headquarters located on the bend of the Machchhu River in
Rajkot District of
Gujarat. It is one of the few princely capitals where most of the properties were named for rulers of different princely states. Wankaner is 50 km north-east of
Rajkot and 220 km from
Ahmedabad.
Wankaner is a combination of two words – ‘Wanka’ which means a ‘bend’ and 'ner' means ‘water stream’ in Gujarati.
Wankaner is famous for its brick makers, potteries, town gates, memorial of Sartanji and his wife and royal initiatives. Major point of attraction is the Wankaner Palace, which is now converted in to a heritage hotel.
Wankaner Junction Railway Station, on the Navlakhi-Mehsana railway line is a major railhead of Western Railways. National Highway 8A passes through Wankaner. By road, the place is well linked with
Morbi, Tankara, Gondal, Jetpur, Sayla and Jamnagar. Rajkot Airport serves Wankaner.
