Qutab Minar, the highest stone tower in India, is located 15 km south of
Connaught Place in
New Delhi.
Qutub-ud-din Aibak, a famous ruler of
Slave dynasty started its construction as a victory tower in 1193 and his successor
Iltutmish completed it.
Qutab Minar is a fine example of early-Afghan architecture. It is not only the tourist destination of India, but also one of the greatest Islamic structures ever raised. Qutab Minar is 73 m tall and tapers from a 15 m diameter base to just 2.5 m at the top. Covered with intricate carvings and verses from the Quran, it is built with red sand stone and marble. There are a number of monuments within the Qutab complex to explore for the tourists. One of Delhi’s most curious antiques, the
Iron Pillar is close to Qutab Minar.
Quwwat-ul-Islam Masjid is another attraction here.
Today, Qutab Minar is slightly tilted and it is no longer possible to climb the tower. Entrance fee is Rs 10 for Indian nationals and US $5 for foreigners.
