Shree Mahadev Temple is an ancient shrine situated at Tambdi Surla, about 12 km from
Mollem, in
South Goa District of
Goa. It is regarded as the only temple of the glorious Kadamba dynasty which had withstood the ravages of time. Shree Mahadev Temple enshrines
Lord Shiva as the presiding deity.
The architecture of this 12th century shrine is a unique blend of Kadamba, Hoysala and Yadava styles. Built with black basalt, it stands on finely ornamented monolithic pillars. The entrance of the temple faces the east; most noteworthy fact is that the rays of the rising sun always fall directly on the deity.
The temple features intricate carvings on its walls and pillars. It has a simple facade with a tower or a shikhara right above the sanctum. The tower features beautiful carvings of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva along with their consorts Saraswathi, Lakshmi and Parvati respectively.
Shree Mahadev Temple is situated on an old trade route which links Goa with the Western Ghats. The temple is now maintained by the Archeological Survey of India.
