Rivona

Rivona village, situated in South Goa District, is a charming place where history and natural beauty gel together in perfect harmony. It lies on the border between modern day Quepem and Sanguem taluks.

The village has a great history from the time when Arabs came for trade in the 13th and 14th centuries. Till the Muslim invasion it was a prosperous capital city.

The rolling hills, lush green forested terrain and the small cultivated fields that dot the landscape presents a pretty picture of nature’s splendor at work. Crisscrossing rivers and fresh water springs add to its charm.

In the outskirts of the village, one can find ancient rock-cut caves. These caves, dug in by Buddhist priests in the 6th or 7th century, are a few examples of Buddhist influence visible in Goa today. The famous Damodar Temple, dedicated to Lord Damodar (an incarnation of Lord Shiva), is also worth visiting.

Mining is a major industry and iron ore and magnesium are extracted from the mines. Farming is the traditional occupation of the people. Wheat, rice and cash crops including areca nut and cashew nuts are cultivated here. The airport close to the village is the Goa Airport. By road, Rivona is well connected with Quepem and Margao.
