Devaki, the mother of
Krishna and Balarama, was the daughter of Devaka and wife of King Vasudeva. Devaki and Vasudeva were imprisoned by her half-brother,
Kamsa, on account of a prophesy that one of Devaki’s sons would kill him. Kamsa killed all six of their sons and the seventh, Balarama was transferred secretly to the womb of another woman. Devaki’s eighth son Krishna, an incarnation of
Lord Vishnu, was also transferred secretly to a nearby village where he was brought up by Nanda and Yasoda. Later Krishna killed Kamsa.
Mother Devaki is worshiped in Sri Devaki Krishna Temple, Goa, where the deity of Devaki is in standing posture with infant Krishna sitting astride on her hip.
