Dandia Raas is a traditional folk art of
Gujarat. This distinctive dance form of
Saurashtra is found mentioned in
Mahabharata and is the prime element of Gopi Culture. Dandia is performed by a group who move in circles to measure steps, marking time by sticks called dandia. Rhythmic music and singing accompany the dance.
Dandia Raas of Maher community is much popular all over India. Major point of attraction is due to their stout spirit and physical appearance and their fighting spirit that is reflected in the dance form. They apply a considerable force when striking the sticks, which resembles as if applying sword against the enemy.
