Karwar, the headquarters of
Uttara Kannada District, is located 519 km north-west of
Bangalore. A port town, on the banks of the
Kali River, Karwar was the settlement of the British and the Portuguese. It was also a major trade center for
pepper. Karwar is known for its fine muslin.
Karwar is blessed with some of the beautiful beaches in the country. Devbagh is the major beach. Karwar harbor and river Kali are other maritime interests.
Dargah of Peer Shan Shamsuddin Kharobat, Naganatha temple, Venkatramana temple, Sadashivgad Hill Fort with the Durga temple and the unique octagonal church are places of historical and religious significance. Muslin factory and Kurmagad Island (with an old fort and Narasimha Shrine) are the other tourist attractions at Karwar.
