Sarod, a stringed instrument, holds a renowned position in
Hindustani Classical Music. It derived its name from Persian word 'Sarood,' which means music.
Sarod is made of wood, and is almost 3-4 foot long. Its neck end consists of a small gourd. There are six main strings and 12 sympathetic strings. Sarod is played with the help of a plectrum called java, which is made of coconut shell. The finger-board is covered with a polished metal plate for easy sliding of the fingers.
Sarod resembles Rabab, which is a popular instrument in the Middle East. Amjad Ali Khan and Ali Akbar Khan are among the leading exponents of Sarod.
