On August 15, 1947, India gained its independence from the British after a long and arduous struggle. Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India, on this day announced the freedom of India at the central hall of parliament with the oft-quoted words 'At the stroke of the midnight hour, as the world sleeps, India wakes to life and freedom.'
In reminiscence of this, Indians celebrate Independence Day on every August 15. Flag-hosting ceremonies, parades and meetings are conducted all over the country. Prime minister addresses the nation from the ramparts of Red Fort on the Independence Day.
