Amrita Shergil
A modernist painter
Amrita Shergil, a modernist painter, was born in the year 1913. Sardar Umrao Singh Shergil and Lady Antoinette, a Hungarian national, were her parents. She specialized in making portraits. Amrita was also well-known for her beauty. At the age of 16, she left France to master painting under the supervision of Pierre Vaillant and Lucien Simon. Her paintings were a blend of European and Indian culture. Bride's Toilet, Hill Women, Siesta and Brahmacharis are among her most popular paintings. In 1941, she died of peritonitis.
