Agra Carpet

Agra is renowned for its hand-knotted carpets. The art of making this particular style of carpets was introduced by the Mughals, during the sixteenth century. The designs in these carpets show a strong Persian influence. They also include oriental styles.

These carpets are characterized by their dark patterns and borders, created on light background. Before the actual weaving process, the designs are mapped on a graph paper. A person describes these designs to the weaver, who then weave the patterns accordingly by twisting the threads and tying knots.

Rough carpets are weaved using jute, while finer varieties are made using cotton.
