Sirpur is situated about 48 miles away from
Raipur in
Chhattisgarh, on the banks of the
Mahanadi, on the national highway to
Sambalpur. Once it was the seat of the kings of Sarabhpura and their successors in Dakshin Kosala. Around 164 mounds have been found around the Sirpur area, out of which only 10 have been excavated so far. A recent excavation by the Archeological Survey of India has discovered a
Buddha statue dating back to the 6th century in Sirpur.
