Chakreshwar Mahadev Temple, also known as Kankeshwar Temple, is a highly revered shrine situated at
Kanki, about 20 km from
Korba, in
Chhattisgarh. The presiding deity is
Lord Shiva. There is a
Shivling enshrined on the main alter of the temple. The idols of
Goddess Parvathi and
Lord Ganesh can be seen behind the Shivling.
This ancient temple is exquisitely garnished with carved images of various gods and goddesses. The entrance door of the temple features carved images of Nagkanyaka. Hundreds of ancient sculptures and idols can be seen all around the temple.
The Shiva Temple situated to the right of the main temple is worth visiting. The most noteworthy feature of the temple is that the Shivling enshrined here can be rotated by hand. A popular belief among the local populace is that this Shivling should be rotated by husband and wife.
Situated to the right side of the Chakreshwar Mahadev Temple is the Bhairav Mandir which enshrines a single stone idol of Bhairav Baba, about 4.5 ft high. The temple complex also features a small Shresht Muni Temple and a Hanuman Temple.
The temple dedicated to Goddess Durga and Kali, outside the boundary of the main temple, is worth visiting.
