Kanger Valley National Park




Kanger Valley (Kangerghati) National Park, founded in 1982, is situated about 27 km from Jagdalpur in Chhattisgarh, on the banks of the Kholaba River. The park is bounded by several villages such as Netanar, Milkulwada and Nangalsar in the north, Kakalgur and Kandanar in the south, and Tirathgarh, Chindawada, Pakhnar, Bispur and Munaga in the west. The Valley gets its name from the Kanger River.

The 34-km-long Kanger Valley, declared Asian Biosphere Reserve, has rich biodiversity, and its fauna includes panther, chital, sambhar, chinkara, tiger, barking deer, mouse deer [rare] bear, wild boar, wild dogs, jungle cat, langoor, black buck, jackals, wolf, hyena, fox, hare, kobra, kraits, python, monitor lizards, peacock, red spur fall, kala teetar, tree pie, drongo. The Park also has a wealth of the lower forms of plants such as fungi, algae, bryophytes and pteridophytes. Birds of prey, scavenging birds, waterbirds, pheasants, reptiles such as snakes, lizards, and butterflies, moths, dragon flies, and grasshoppers are common.

Kanger Valley has some famous natural caves such as Dandak, Kutumsar and Kailash. Kanger Dhara and Bhaimsa Dharha are two good picnic resorts here. Bhaimsa Dharha is a crocodile park. The Park is rich in tribal population and Sal and Teak forests.

The visiting season is from February to June. The roadway approach is via Jagdalpur-Sargipal-Jatam-Nianar-Bodal Netanar road (33km). The nearest airport is at Raipur, and the railway station is at Jagdalpur.
