Hajipur, the administrative headquarters of
Vaishali District, is situated on the banks of the
Ganges River. It is enroute to
Nalanda from
Vaishali. Vaishali is 35 km away.
Formerly known as Ukkacala, Hajipur is a place of religious significance, as a portion of Ananda's (the personal attendant of Buddha) ashes was enshrined here. Besides, Hajipur was one of the prominent Mughal territories during the reign of Akbar (from 1556-1605).
