Motihari is the administrative headquarters of
East Champaran District,
Bihar and is situated on the eastern banks of a picturesque lake. Motihari is 120 km north of
Patna.
Motihari has great historical importance: In 1917, Mahatma Gandhi launched his very first Satyagraha in India, against the exploitations indigo planters. It was here, he faced his first trial and imprisonment in India. It is also famous as the place of birth of George Orwell, the renowned author of 'Animal Farm' and '1984'.
Motihari is a major agricultural trade center in the district. Sugar milling and cotton weaving form the staple industries.
Major attractions in and around the city include Ashoka's monument at Lauria Areraj and Ramgarhwa. The Shiva Temple at Areraj is also worth a visit.
The nearest airport is Patna Airport.
Motihari Railway Station is on the
Muzaffarpur-Bettiah line. National Highway 28A passes through Motihari and regular buses connect Motihari with Patna and Bettiah (45 km north-west of Motihari).
