Chhapra, the administrative headquarters of
Saran District, is a pretty town situated at the confluence of the
Ghaghra and
Ganges rivers in
Bihar. It is 70 km north-west of
Patna.
Legends say that Chhapra was blessed when Ram and Lakshman crossed this place, on their way to Janakpur (Mithila) to marry Sita. It is believed that the Ahilya Uddhar near Revelganj, on the banks of Sarayu, was built by Lord Ram.
Major attraction of the town is the Dharamnath temple. A religious festival, Kartik Poornima, (full moon in the Hindu month of Kartik) attracts millions for a holy dip at the confluence of the Ganges and Gandak.
Nearest airport is at Patna.
Chhapra Railway Station is on the Siwan-Hajipur line. National Highway 85 has its route through Chhapra. National Highway 101 and National Highway 102 originate from Chhapra.
