Carved out of
Munger District in July 1994, Lakhisarai is a newly established district located on the southern part of
Bihar. Lakhisarai District is flanked by districts
Begusarai in the north, Munger in the east,
Jamui in the south, and
Patna and
Sheikhpura in the north-western and south-western parts respectively. Also known by the name Luckeesarai, this district covers an area of about 1,229 sq km and is headquartered at
Lakhisarai. This district has a population of over 8 million.
Geographically, Lakhisarai District is divided into three parts - Hilly area, Flood hit area and Plain area. The hilly area comprises of hill series and rocks such as Kachhua hills, Kajra Mountains up to Abhaipur and Jaynagar Mountains including forest area. The flood hit area comprises the whole of Pipariya block and some part of Barahiya. But this area is called the stock of food grains when it comes to the case of cultivation and agriculture.
Rest of the part which is full of greenery and cultivable land constitutes the plain area.
Lakhisarai District is good in cultivation and forest. The economy of the district depends mainly on agriculture. Wheat, Paddy and Maize are the main cereal crops cultivated in this area. Rice and lentils are some other important crops. The Ganges, Mohane, Harohar and Kiul are the main rivers flowing through the district.
The district is known for its 52 ponds, which were used as a water container for the purpose of agriculture. Few of them which are still in use are Ashtaghatti, Sansar Pokher, Ojhba Pokher and Sonia Pokher.
Major tourist spots in Lakhisaria include Ashokdham, Bhagwati Mandir of Barahiya, Sringi Rishi, Asthan, Abhainath Asthan on Abhaipur Mountains, Maharani Asthan of Abhaipur, Govindbaba Asthan (Mandap) Rampur and the jungles of Kajra. Other important historical and religious places are Surajgarha, Khetriyakund, Rajauna and Nauma Barahiya.
The National Highway 80 traverses about 75 km through the northern part of the district via Barahiya, Lakhisarai and Surajgarha.
