Situated 2 km north of
Vaishali in
Bihar, Kolhua is the historic site where
Lord Buddha preached his last sermon, hinting at his imminent departure from the mortal world. There is a stone pillar here with a lion capital erected by the Mauryan emperor
Ashoka in the third century BC, called the
Ashoka pillar, to commemorate Buddha’s last sermon. Near the pillar there are remnants of a monastery and a large tank, known as Ramkund, where Buddha used to live during his stay at
Varanasi. Kolhua is 55 km from Patna Airport and 35 km from Hajipur Railway Station in
Vaishali District.
