The Indo-Aryan languages Group, one of the major language families in the world, has some of the most widely spoken languages of the world in its assemblage.
Sanskrit is considered the most ancient among all the Indo-Aryan languages. In India, majority of the official 22 languages belong to this group. A number of languages in this group are written in either
Devanagari or
Brahmi Script. Ancient Indo-Aryan languages (like Sanskrit), Intermediate Indo-Aryan languages (termed Bibhasas) and Modern Indo-Aryan languages (
Prakrit languages) are the major categories of this group. Indian languages such as
Hindi (nearly 500 million users worldwide),
Bengali (more than 200 million users worldwide),
Gujarati,
Punjabi,
Oriya,
Assamese belong to this family of languages.
