Begusarai is situated in the middle of the Ganges plain, just north of the
Ganges river. The name Begusarai is derived from 'serai' (Persian, meaning travelers' lodge), a building in the center of the town. A major commercial center, Begusarai is one of the important districts in
Bihar with an area of 1,918 sq km and a population of 2.4 million.
The Ganges and Kamla are the two major rivers. Economy depends on agriculture and industry. Wheat, maize, chilli and pepper are some of the important agricultural crops. Industries include fertilizer factory, thermal power station and petro-chemicals.
