Udaipur, the seat of administration of
South Tripura District, is an ancient town situated 52 km south of
Agartala,
Tripura.
This quaint town is also called the 'City of Lakes', alluding to its vast beautiful lakes that spread across the place. This market town still exudes an air of antiquity, something quite different from what one could experience in the other cities of the state. Udaipur was the capital of the state until the 18th century.
Places of tourist interest include the Jagannath Digthi Tank and the ruins of a temple on its banks, Moghul Masjid, Tripura Sundari Temple, Bhuvaneswari Temple, Gunabati group of Temples and the Maharaja Govinda Manikya. Udaipur is often referred to as 'the Temple City', owing to the numerous shrines that dot the cityscape. Prominet lakes in the city are
Amarsagar, Kalyansagar, Jagannath Dighi, Mahadev Dighi, and Sukhsagar.
C A Agartala Airport is the nearest airport. Udaipur is linked with Agartala by regular bus services. Domestic transport is by means of shared jeep. The nearest railhead is at Kumarghat.
