Formed in 1839, Nagaon District is one of the largest districts in
Assam. It covers an area of 3,831 sq km of fertile land and thickly forested hills. The population is about 2.3 million. The
Brahmaputra and its tributaries Kolong, Kopili, and Jamuna flow through Nagaon. The climate is wet and humid. The main agricultural products are
rice, sugarcane, mustard, jute, coconuts, bananas and vegetables.
Nagaon is famous for temples, monuments, and many other landmarks. Important tourist destinations: Batadrava (the birthplace of a Vaishnava reformer of the sixteenth century),
Dabaka (home of ancient temples), Raha, Hojai (famous for 'agar,' an aromatic substance used in perfumes), Jugijan (well known for remnants of a fort and temples), and Kaliabor.
