Shravan is one of the holiest months in the
North Indian Hindu Calendar. It is the fifth month of the Hindu calendar (July-August). All the days of this month are considered auspicious.
Shravan Mondays, Mondays of the month of Shravan, are specially observed with austerity and women usually fast on this day. Many religious festivals and ceremonies fall in this month.
It is believed that Lord Krishna, the eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu was born at midnight of the 8th day of the dark half of the month of Shravan.
The full moon day of Shravan, called the Shravana Poornima, is considered to be an auspicious day by the Kashmiri Pundits. The day is dedicated to Lord Shiva.
Nagarpanchami, one of the major festival of South Karnataka, is celebrated on the 5th day in the Shravan month. Other major fairs and festivals celebrated in this month include Vasco Saptha, Chitou Amavasya, Kajri Navami, Raksha Bandhan, Parashuram Mahadev Fair and Veerpuri Fair.
