Agartala

Located in the western part of Tripura, Agartala is a storehouse of rich cultural diversity. It is famous for the twin modern palaces, Ujjayanta and Kunjaban. The city was once part of a Hindu kingdom. When Tripura gained statehood in 1972, Agartala became the state capital.

Built in the Indo-Saracenic style in 1901 by Maharaja Radhakishore Manikya, the Ujjayanta Palace is a two-storeyed mansion with 28 hectares of parkland. It now houses the office of the State Legislative Assembly. The temples Umanneshwar and Jagganath are on the ground floor of the palace.

Built in 1917 by Maharaja Birendra Kishore Manikya, the Kunjaban Palace is located near the Ujjayanta Palace on a hillock. The Neermahal is a summer resort built in the middle of lake Rudrasagar. It is the only lake palace in Eastern India, and has been built in a mixture of Hindu and Mughal styles. Near the city, there are places such as Debtamura, Unakoti, and Pilak where you can find rock cuts and carvings.

Agartala is a place of tribal festivals including Karachi and Garia Puja. The Chandan Jatra temple, Jagannath temple, Umamaheshwar temple, and Laxminarayan temple are the famous temples of the city. The State Museum, situated in the heart of the city, preserves rare images, epigraphs and rare coins.

The best time to visit is between October and April.
