Goddess Kamakhya

Goddess Kamakhya, the presiding deity of the famous Kamakhya Temple, is regarded as the mother goddess in Assam. She is believed to be the incarnation of Goddess Sati, the wife of Lord Shiva and is considered to be source of all material and creations.

The present site of Kamakhya temple is one of the several Shaktipithas. Goddess Kamakhya is worshipped as a female fertility symbol in this temple. This temple was built in the late 15th century by King Biswa Singh, the erstwhile ruler of Coochbehar, to fulfill the promise he made to the goddess for helping him in his war against the rulers of Ahom Dynasty. The four pathways leading to the temple are believed to be built by King Narakasura, a demon king, who wished to marry the goddess.

Goddess Kamakhya is revered as well as feared in Assam, as she is equal with her blessings and punishments.
