The only hill station in
Assam, Haflong (680 m above sea level) is 85 km north of
Silchar. Famous for its scenic features comprising of blue hills, green rivers, unique orchids such as Blue Vanda and rare species of birds, Haflong is often referred to as the land of blue hills. Inhabitants primarily include Himar, Mizo and
Naga tribes. Pineapple and oranges are grown here in abundance.
Among the major landmarks are Haflong Lake and waterfalls at Maibong. Migratory birds including black-capped cibia, Himalayan griffon and spotted dove are found here.
Tourist offices run by Assam Tourism cater to the needs of tourists. Gliding, paragliding and trekking are the major activities. Jatinga and Maibong are nearby attractions.
Haflong is connected by road from Guwahati, which is 345 km away. The nearest airport is 252 km away at Barapani, Shillong. Lumding Junction Railway Station, 60 km away, is the closest railhead.
