Slow Loris

Slow Loris (Nycticebus coucang) is nocturnal, small and woolly, about the size of a small cat. It has short ears, stumpy tail and large round eyes each encircled with a brown ring.

There is a brown streak present on the crown and the back of head. The color of the coat varies in color, gray to varying shades of gray-brown dark patches around the eyes, separated by a white line and with wide dark band on the middle of the back. Stout limbs, second toe clawed, and other toes are furnished with flat nails. Tail is very small.

The length of the male can measure up to 265-380 mm and female is about 268-335 mm. Male weighs 850-1670 gm and female 900-1320 gm.

The species has a number of variations connected primarily to climatic conditions and geographic isolation. Ten geographic variations have been identified, which is based on the darkness of the fur or the extent and shape of the dark markings on the head. Its eyes are used in traditional medicine.

The animal can be spotted in the Dibru-Saikhowa National Park, Assam.
