Majuli Island is the world's largest river island on the
River Brahmaputra. Having more than 650 sq km, it is famous for
Satras. There are over 665 Satras in
Assam, of which 65 are situated in Majuli. The important satras in this island are the Auniti Satra, Garamur Satra,
Kamalabari Satra, and
Dakhinpat Satra.
Majuli was the cultural capital of Assam for the past five hundred years. It is home to different tribal and non-tribal communities belonging to different religions. The handloom and pottery work of these tribes in Majuli is famous all over the World. A large number of migratory birds visit this island. October to November is the best time to visit. It is located 20 km from
Jorhat town.
Majuli can be reached by Jorhat Nimatighat from Jorhat, Dhokuakhana from
Dhemaji and Luit-Khabolughat from North Lakhimpur.
