Burhi Dhing River, known earlier as Namphuk River, meanders through the plains facing
Patkai Hills for 50 km and then enters into Joypur-Digboi low hill range. Flowing through the plains near Joypur for a 120 km, the Burhi Dhing joins the
Brahmaputra at about 32 km south-west of
Dibrugarh.
It has many tributaries such as the Digboi, Tingrai, Tipling, Telpani, Deherang and Sessa on the north bank and the Tipam and Disam on the south bank.
