Bihu, the national festival of
Assam, is a harvest festival celebrated thrice in a year. The word Bihu is said to be from the
Sanskrit word of Vishu.
The festivals are celebrated at various stages of the cultivation of paddy. The three Bihus celebrated in Assam are Bohag Bihu, Kaati Bihu and Magh Bihu. Bohaag is in the middle of April, Maagh is in the middle of January and Kaati is in the middle of October.
