Ponung Dance is performed by the tribal people belonging to the Adi village of
Arunachal Pradesh. This dance is performed during important occasions.
The performers consist of a group of girls and a man, who is the leader. The girls form a chain by stretching their hands over each other’s shoulders. They dance and move in a circular fashion. The male dancer, called 'miri', dances and sings at the center of the circular chain formed by the girls. He holds and shakes a sword like musical instrument, called 'yoksha', overhead. He sings a song, one line at a time, which is repeated slowly in chorus by the girls in a rhythmic fashion.
