Vizianagaram District




Vizianagaram District in Andhra Pradesh covers an area of 6,539 sq km of land. It was formed in the year 1979 and in earlier days, was part of the Kalinga kingdom ruled by Satavahanas, Golconda, Nawabs and the British. The major source of income is agriculture and allied activities.

The population is approximately 2 million and the working class represents half of the population.

The predominant industries of this region include agro business and food processing, cotton yarn and cotton fabrics, jute and jute products, leather and leather based products, chemicals, drugs and pharmaceuticals.

Vizianagaram is a major railway junction. The nearest airport is at Visakhapatnam (64 km.)

Tourist attractions include Bobbili Fort, Vizianagaram Fort, Bodikonda Hill and Chintapalli Beach. Important pilgrim centers are Govindapuram, Ramathirtham and Punyagiri. Musical instruments called Bobbili Veenas are the famous handicrafts of this region.
