Sri Veda Narayanaswami Temple is located in
Nagalapuram, 70 km southeast of
Tirupati. It houses an image of the Matsya form of
Vishnu, with Sridevi and Bhudevi on either side. The idol is in the posture of holding the
Sudarsana Chakra in prayoga (ready for release).
It is believed that Lord Vishnu, in the form of Matsya, killed a demon named Somakudu and rescued the Vedas. Built by the Vijayanagar emperor Sri Krishnadevaraya, the temple is a fine specimen of the Vijayanagar style of architecture.
The annual festivals celebrated here are Brahmotsavam and Surya Puja together with the Float festival, conducted on the 12th, 13th and 14th days of the month of Phalguna (February and March). It is worth mentioning that during these three days, the sunbeam fall on the main deity between 1800 hrs and 1815 hrs. It falls on the feet, on the chest and on the forehead correspondingly on the first day, second day and on the third day, thereby depicting the worship by Surya, the Sun God, himself.
