Chandavaram is about 150 km from
Vijayawada and 75 km from
Ongole. Lying on the right bank of the
Gundlakamma River, Chandavaram is famous as a Buddhist site. A double terraced
stupa, which is unique in its elevation, is seen on the top of a hillock known as ‘
Singarayakonda’. The excavations at this place have found over 24 beautifully decorated
Buddhist slabs, stupa built on terraced platform, apsidal Chaityagriha (place of worship), votive stupas,
viharas (a domicile for Buddhist monks), drum slabs,
Satavahana coins, Brahmi label inscriptions and other momentous cultural materials which dates back to 2nd Century BC.
