Kukkuteswara Swamy Temple




Kukkuteswara Swamy Temple is an ancient temple located at Pithapuram in East Godavari District of Andhra Pradesh. It was built during the 10th century. Pithapuram is about is 20 km north of Kakinada.

The presiding deity here is Lord Shiva under the name 'Kukkuteswara Swamy'. The temple has a Shivling, which is made of white marble stone of about 2 ft in height. The Shivling has wings on both side and a cock at its back; hence it is named as Kukkuteswara. The annual festival of the temple falls in January-February and lasts for five days.

Close to this temple are Kunti Madhava Swamy Temple and Puruhutika Devi Temple (built in the 10th century).

Pithapuram Railway Station on the Chennai-Kolkata rail route is the nearest railhead. By road, Pithapuram is connected with Peddapuram, Rajahmundry, Samalkot, Kakinada and Uppada Beach.
