Sunbird is the common name for tropical, Old World birds. They are generally considered to form part of the family Nectariinidae together with sugarbirds, flowerpeckers and spiderhunters. They are placed in the genera: Anthreptes, Nectarinia, and Aethopyga - all three of which occur in India.
Sunbirds have long and slender, highly curved bills and tube-shaped tongues. They have short legs. The males of most species are brightly colored, with metallic, sometimes velvety, plumage. Many species have impressive iridescent colors. Diet consists of nectar and small insects.
