A distinguished poet, renowned freedom fighter and great orator, Sarojini Naidu was born in
Hyderabad on 13 February 1879. She was the first woman Governor of
Uttar Pradesh. Aghornath Chattopadhyaya, the founder of Nizam?s College, and Barada Sundari Devi were her parents.
Sarojini Naidu passed her matriculation at the age of 12, and did her higher education at King's college (London) and Girton College (Cambridge). Her remarkable singing ability fetched her title of 'Nightingale of India'.
Sarojini Naidu started her political career in 1906, but she became an active participant in 1917. During this period, she came into contact with several distinguished leaders such as Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru,
Rabindranath Tagore and Annie Besant. She made enlightening speeches on welfare of youth, dignity of labor, women's emancipation and nationalism.
As a member of Home Rule Deputation, Sarojini Naidu went to England, in 1919. She actively campaigned for the Montague-Chelmsford Reforms, the Khilafat issue, the Rowlatt Act and the Civil Disobedience Movement. She also took part in the Salt
Satyagraha and the Round Table Conference in London.
Sarojini became the President of Indian National Congress in 1925. In 1940, she organized a National Week against the Cripps Mission to India. Later in 1942, she was jailed followed by the Quit India Resolution of the AICC in Mumbai.
Sarojini Naidu passed away at Lucknow on 2 March 1949.
