Bhongir Fort is located at
Bhongir in Nalgonda District at a height of 610 m above sea level. Bhongir lies at a distance of 51 km from
Hyderabad and is said to be built by Tribhuvanamalla Vikramaditya VI, a Chalukya king. The town acquired the name Tribhuvanagiri, which in course of time became Bhuvanagiri and later Bhongir. The histories of Kakati Rudramamba and her grand son Prataparudra are linked with Bhongir.
This fort is built upon a rock. In the 15th century, the fort became the property of the Bahmani Sultans who tried to renovate it, thus incorporating an Islamic style into it. The fort is an egg-shaped construction with two entry points protected by huge rocks. A moat encircles the fort, which has a wide underground chamber, trap doors, an armory, stables, ponds and wells. A panoramic view of the surrounding countryside is available from the fort area. The fort later fell into ruins, neglected by the Nizam’s state of Hyderabad, and remains neglected till today.
Bhongir is well connected by rail and road from Hyderabad. The
nearest airport is at Hyderabad.
