Batakamma festival is celebrated in the
Telangana region of
Andhra Pradesh. It is a month long festival, where Goddess Batakamma 's idol is worshipped and is made to float on the rivers and lakes. Batakamma festival is celebrated during the month of September and October.
This festival is celebrated by the women in memory of Vaisya, a married woman, who was killed by her own brother. According to tradition, the married daughters visit and stay with their parents to recall Goddess Parvati’s visit to her parents. In the evenings of the whole month, women gather in a community hall and dance all round the floral Batakamma. Boddemma festival starts nine days preceding the Batakamma festival.
