Koothu-P-Pattarai, a full-time Tamil theater, has been organizing contemporary plays in Tamil for the last 27 years. It reproduces and presents native folk arts in a contemporary style. The name Koothu-p-pattarai is formed from theru koothu, a Tamil folk form.
Activities of the Koothu-P-Pattarai include production and presentation of plays, conducting workshops for teaching the elements of traditional theater art forms and organizing lectures and demonstrations for children in educational institutions with a view to create awareness in folk theater and its significance to contemporary theater.
In addition, it is a research center for performing arts in South India and there is a theater speech laboratory, where training is given to its actors on the nuances of speech in its varied dialects and expressions.
