Dhrek (Melia azedarach Linn) is a fast growing, thin canopy, and deciduous tree distributed throughout India. It is also grown as a border plant on field boundary.
Dhrek can be grown on a variety of soil textures ranging from saline to alkaline, but frost is harmful to this plant. The plant can withstand heavy lopping. The leaves are used as an animal food.
There are two varieties isolated, Bakain (Melia compacta) and Melia azedarach. Melia compacta has umbrella like dispersal awning, grown for shade. The wood is largely used for making furniture, doors and windows and packing cases. The leaves and fruits have pest-repellant qualities.
