Krishna River originates in the
Western Ghats near
Mahabaleshwar in
Maharashtra, at an altitude of 1,336 m above the sea level. It then flows east through the states of Maharashtra,
Karnataka and
Andhra Pradesh for a distance of 1400 km before merging in the
Bay of Bengal at Hamasaladeevi in Andhra Pradesh.
Two dams, Srisailam and
Nagarjunasagar, are constructed across Krishna River. Though the river has a dozen tributaries, Tungabhadra is the noteworthy of the lot. Other tributaries include the Koyna, Bhima, Mallaprabha, Ghataprabha, Yerla, Warna, Dindi, Musi and Dudhganga rivers.
